Treatment of Ulcers
For many people having corns and calluses on their feet is commonplace - part of the daily wear and tear from sports, jogging or just being on their feet for long periods of time. But for people with certain medical conditions, even a minor injury can lead to a foot ulcer (open sore) that may have serious consequences, even amputation.
Foot complications lead to more hospital days than any other complication of diabetes, and may result in amputation. Research has demonstrated that over 80% of foot ulcers and amputations are preventable by educating people about proper foot care and footwear. Over 90% of foot ulcers can be healed, often without hospitalization.
Not all wounds respond in the same ways. Individual wound management should be governed by the patient's physician.
